So, as the bettor, you can either wager that Carolina will “cover” this spread, meaning they will win the game by 3.5 points or more, or you can wager on Denver, meaning you're wagering that Carolina will not win by at least 3.5 points.

On a side note: if you see the word “EVEN” next to the team, that means that there is no spread between the team. Your bet is simply in regards to which team will win, regardless of the final score.

3. Over/Under

The over/under is when bettors wager that the total combined score between both participants in the game will either exceed or fall short of a number that the sportsbook has established.

As an example: if the sports book establishes that the over/under for a particular game is 60 points, then your wager will be based on whether you believe that the combined score between both teams will be more or less than 60 points.

If you bet the over, you think both teams will have a combined scoring output more than 60.

So, using Super Bowl 50 as an example, Denver led Carolina 10-0 after the first quarter.

So, whoever had the square which corresponded with “O” on the Denver side and “O” on the Carolina side would win the funds for that quarter.

Similarly, the halftime score of that game was 13-7 in Denver's favor.

So whomever had the square which corresponded with “3” on the Denver side and “7” on the Carolina side would win the funds for the second quarter.
