While the expansion of the online casino industry in Michigan has been a boon for many, it has also brought about challenges, particularly with the rise of offshore casinos. These unlicensed operators pose risks to both players and local governments, as they are not beholden to US consumer protection laws. This lack of regulation can leave players vulnerable in case of disputes or fraudulent activities.
A recent study revealed a 64% increase in fraudulent activities within the iGaming sector between 2022 and 2024, resulting in losses of about $1.2 billion for mobile casino and betting platforms alone. Offshore gambling sites also present issues such as potential rigging of games like roulette and manipulation of slot machine odds. Moreover, players may encounter delays or refusals when attempting to withdraw funds from offshore platforms without any explanation.
Considering these risks, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has taken decisive action against 13 offshore casino sites that were reportedly targeting Michigan residents illegally. The operators, mostly based in Curacao, the Autonomous Island of Anjouan, and Costa Rica, received cease-and-desist orders from the regulator. Henry Williams, the executive director of the MGCB, emphasized that these offshore websites put residents at significant security risks, displaying deceptive practices that endanger players.
One of the deception tactics involved restrictions on withdrawals and imposing unreasonable wagering limits before allowing players to cash out their winnings. In response to the escalating risks posed by offshore operators bypassing Michigan's legal gambling system, the MGCB aims to curtail such activities to protect the state's residents. The board expects the sanctioned operators to halt all illegal operations within 14 days of receiving the warnings, with potential legal consequences for non-compliance looming.
The MGCB's proactive measures align with its commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable gaming environment for Michigan residents. The board recently launched the ‘Don't Regret the Bet' responsible gaming campaign, which garnered an Emmy Award in late 2024, underscoring its dedication to promoting responsible gambling practices.
