Denver at San Diego
The San Diego Chargers seem like they find new ways to lose games week after week. Against Oakland, they were lined up for a 36 yard field goal attempt that would've tied the game and sent it into overtime, but rookie Drew Kaser couldn't get the ball in place for kicker Josh Lambo to even try and make the kick. This week, they'll face the unenviable task of taking on the Denver Broncos, who are fresh off their first loss of the season.
Pick: Denver
Philadelphia at Washington
Both of these teams were involved with fairly substantial upsets last week. Most people picked the Redskins to lose to the Ravens last Sunday, and the Eagles to easily beat the Lions. Instead, the opposite took place, with the underdogs prevailing in both games. So, this early-season NFC East
matchup takes on increasing importance, as Philadelphia can keep place with the Dallas Cowboys with a win, and the Redskins can remain one game back from the division lead with a win of their own.
Pick: Washington
Cincinnati at New England
So much for that “being rusty” idea. Tom Brady looked to be in midseason form last week against Cleveland, throwing for 406 yards and three touchdowns. Despite not having practiced at all with tight end Martellus Bennett, the two of them connected for all three scores last Sunday. New England has historically matched up with the Bengals very well in the Belichick-Brady era, and there's no reason to think this game won't be in the Patriots favor again.
Pick: New England
Baltimore at NY Giants
After starting off the season hot, both of these teams find themselves going in the wrong direction. The Giants have lost three straight games after starting the season 2-0, and now sit at the bottom of the NFC East. Baltimore has lost consecutive home games, after starting the season 3-0 themselves. The loser of this game could find themselves in a precarious position, looking upwards at their rivals in their respective divisions.
Pick: New York
Carolina at New Orleans
Nobody thought that, through five games this year, the Carolina Panthers would have lost four of them. But, here we are. Not only is Carolina sitting at the bottom of the
NFC South, but they've already accumulated two losses in the NFC South. Their only win this season was against the lowly San Francisco 49ers. The “Super Bowl loser hangover” appears to be very, very real for the Panthers. For their sake, let's hope the porous Saints defense is a temporary cure.
Pick: Carolina
Pittsburgh at Miami
Tom Brady might have stole the headlines for quarterback play last week, but Ben Roethlisberger had another brilliant week himself. He threw for 380 yards and four touchdowns; the latter number could have been even higher if wide receiver Sammie Coates — who had two touchdown catches anyway — didn't drop a pair of sure-fire touchdown passes from Big Ben. Roethlisberger could have another field day against the rag-tag Dolphins secondary.
Pick: Pittsburgh
Jacksonville at Chicago
Two weeks ago, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley looked like he might not survive the team's trip to London to play the Indianapolis Colts. But after beating Indianapolis, he could re-affirm his job security by picking up a few more wins in the portion of the Jaguars schedule that's a bit more favorable. The Bears are an injury-ravaged football team, so if Bradley wants to capitalize on the momentum gained in London, this is the week to do so.
Pick: Jacksonville
San Francisco at Buffalo
About three weeks ago, the Buffalo Bills were an 0-2 football team, and head coach Rex Ryan looked like he could be fired at any single moment. Fast forward to today, and the Bills are 3-2, only one game behind the New England Patriots in the AFC East; one of those three wins actually came at the hands of New England. They should keep up this shocking resurrection against a San Francisco team that looks to be the worst team in the NFL.
Pick: Buffalo
Los Angeles at Detroit
Detroit is that team that wins the games you think they won't, and loses the games you think they won't. Most people didn't think they would beat the Colts in Indianapolis in Week 1, and virtually nobody picked them to beat Philadelphia last week. Conversely, everyone thought they'd beat Tennessee in Week 2 and Chicago in Week 4, but they didn't. So, who knows what they'll do this week? It appears they should be at the Rams, who have to travel to Detroit… which means we should pick the Rams to win.
Pick: Los Angeles
Cleveland at Tennessee
A proverbial “toilet bowl” game between the two teams that finished with the two worst records in the NFL last season. Tennessee picked up a much-needed win against Miami last week, while the Browns were smoke by Tom Brady and the Patriots. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota should have a good day against the Browns 25th-ranked passing defense.
Pick: Tennessee
Kansas City at Oakland
The results of this
AFC West match-up could have major implications for how this division shapes up over the course of the season. The winner of this game keeps pace with the Broncos, and would remain undefeated in AFC West play. Oakland looks to be the favorite in this game, having won three straight games, and featuring an offense that continues to show depth and versatility.
Pick: Oakland
Atlanta at Seattle
After consecutive weeks of beating the two teams that appeared in last year's Super Bowl, the Falcons have put the rest of the league on notice. The key question for them remains whether they'll fold in the second half of the season, as they've done in years before. They'll face an enormous challenge this week, playing the Seahawks in one of the toughest venues in the NFL.
Pick: Seattle
Dallas at Green Bay
In a bit of a rarity, especially with the interesting dilemma they now have at the quarterback position, the Dallas Cowboys are still flying somewhat under the radar. They've won four straight games, with two of those coming against teams that won their respective divisions last year. Last Sunday, they absolutely drubbed the Cincinnati Bengals, in a game that wasn't nearly as close as the 28-14 score would indicate. If they beat the Packers on Sunday, a lot more people will be talking about them.
Pick: Green Bay
Indianapolis at Houston
After devoting so many resources towards upgrading their offense this past season, the Houston Texans aren't seeing anywhere near the return on investment they had hoped. Last Sunday against Minnesota, the offense was completely and utterly stifled. They failed to convert a single third-down opportunity all day, going 0-12. If they can't get things going against a Colts defense that surrendered 522 yards of offense to the
Brian Hoyer-led Bears, it's going to get very uncomfortable in Houston.
Pick: Houston
NY Jets at Arizona
This is a “must-win” game for the Arizona Cardinals. If they lose to a Jets team that has struggled mightily over the past few weeks, the Cardinals season might effectively be over. Overcoming four losses in their first six games, in the ultra-competitive NFC West (and NFC in general) seems far-fetched, at best. The Jets have been allowing over 27 points per game in their current three-game losing streak, and also find themselves looking up in the AFC East at New England and Buffalo. This is a “loser goes home” game as much as any this week.
Pick: Arizona
