Picks and Predictions for the NFL Conference Championship Round Weekend Games for the 2018-19 Season Playoffs

Los Angeles Rams (+3.5) vs New Orleans Saints (-3.5): Sunday Jan 20 (2:05 PM EST)

The Rams barged into the AFC title game by eliminating the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round. All of a sudden, Los Angeles, which doesn’t really need more than a healthy Todd Gurley in the backfield, has stumbled upon a two-headed monster in their its attack, as C.J. Anderson turned out to be more than just an insurance policy for Gurley. Anderson has rushed for at least 123 yards in each of the Rams’ last three games. Gurley and Anderson are going to be a headache for the Saints, but it’s not like New Orleans does not have the personnel to make Los Angeles sweat bullets. For one, Drew Brees and Michael Thomas have been playing sweet music together in the team’s passing attack. The two were mostly responsible for New Orleans’ takedown of the Philadelphia Eagles last week at home. Another thing going in the way of the Saints is that they have home-field advantage in the conference championship round.

In recent years, both the Rams and Saints have shown their prowess in the playoffs. The Rams have demonstrated a tendency to capitalize on strong offensive plays, led by their effective rushing duo. Meanwhile, the Saints have consistently leveraged their home-field advantage, thriving in the lively atmosphere at the Superdome. These factors contribute to their competitive edge during playoff encounters, making this matchup particularly intriguing for fans and analysts to follow.

Writer's Prediction: Saints win, 27-24.

New England Patriots (+3) vs Kansas City Chiefs (-3): Sunday Jan 20 (5:40 PM EST)

Tom Brady has seen it all in football. He’s been in countless playoff appearances, but it’s rare that he and the Patriots play the role of a road team in this portion of the NFL season.  Still, they will hit the field at Arrowhead Stadium with a psychological advantage over the Chiefs, whom New England outlasted in a shootout back in Week 6 in Foxboro, 43-40. Things have changed a lot since then though. For one, the Chiefs seemed to have finally the defensive prowess to complement the team’s offense. That was fully evident in Kansas City’s 31-13 home win over the Indianapolis Colts in which the Chiefs didn’t let Andrew Luck or anyone on the opposing team to get any offensive rhythm. That was saying a lot, considering the Colts had arguably the best offensive line in the entire league. The Patriots also have a sturdy offensive line, but at least the Chiefs passed their “training” in the Indianapolis game.

Expect a fascinating contest between Brady’s experience and Mahomes’ exciting play. The Patriots’ defense will be tasked with containing Mahomes, whose ability to extend plays has proven challenging for opponents. Meanwhile, Kelce poses a significant threat, making New England's coverage schemes very important. Their ability to adapt on the fly will be key in countering Kansas City's offensive weapons.

Weather could play an important role in this game at Arrowhead Stadium. January in Kansas City often brings chilly temperatures, which may impact how both teams execute their game plans.

If conditions are windy or icy, passing games might see more challenges, potentially favoring rushing plays and affecting overall scoring. Both teams will need to adjust quickly, using their ground game efficiently to gain yardage and maintain possession.

Writer's Prediction: Chiefs win, 33-28.
