New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Rams Predictions – Super Bowl LIII – February 3 2019

New England Patriots
The final stage is set. The New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams will meet in Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta, where Tom Brady will look to get his sixth Super Bowl ring. Meanwhile, the Rams are looking to avenge the franchise’s loss to the Patriots back in 2002 at Super Bowl 36, when the team was still based in St. Louis.

Historical Context of Super Bowl Matchups

The Patriots have been a dominant force in recent history, winning five of their eight Super Bowl appearances between 2001 and 2019. These victories have secured their era of success under Brady and Belichick. The Rams, who last won the Super Bowl in 2000, are looking to make a strong comeback on this grand stage. That win for New England marked the beginning of the Belichick-Brady era and if Hollywood scripted this they would bring it full circle here in 2019 with a Patriots win before heading off into the sunset. Will New England add to their dynasty’s legend? Or will the Rams put on a show and become the new sheriffs in town? The sportsbook expectedly likes experience in this matchup, giving the Patriots a slight 2.5-point edge.

Betting Preview for the New England Patriots vs Los Angeles Rams NFL Season Week 16 Game on February 23, 2018

Where: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta Georgia When: Sunday, February 23,  20189 6:30 PM ET Line: New England Patriots (-2.5) vs Los Angeles Rams (+2.5) – view all 2018 NFL lines TV Broadcast: CBS

Betting on the New England Patriots (11-5 Regular Season)

For the third straight year, the Patriots are going to the Super Bowl after Tom Brady and company eliminated the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game with a 37-31 overtime win at Arrowhead Stadium last Sunday. Brady didn’t play a great game, but his performance against the Chiefs was good enough to carry the Patriots into a victory. Brady passed for 348 passing yards with a touchdown and two interceptions on 30-of-46 completions. In two games in the playoffs, Brady has amassed 691 passing yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions on a 91.5 passer rating.  New England’s success in the postseason, however, can be largely attributed not only to Brady but also to his protection unit and the team’s ground attack. For the record, Brady has yet to be sacked in these playoffs, which is somewhat surprising, considering he faced Joey Bosa and the Los Angeles Chargers and Chris Jones and the Chiefs. Up against the Rams’ stout defensive line in the Super Bowl, Brady expects the Pats’ offensive line to show up again. Meanwhile, rookie running back Sony Michel has arguably been New England’s MVP in the playoffs so far, having rushed for 242 yards and five touchdowns in the last two games. The Patriots’ offense is known for its adaptability and precision. During the 2018 season, they excelled in quick, short passes that kept defenses off balance and maximized Brady’s swift decision-making. This approach, combined with their effective ground game led by Sony Michel, allows them to sustain long drives and control the tempo. The Patriots are 3-0 against the spread (ATS) in their last three games overall.

Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (13-3 Regular Season)

Whether the Rams were the worthy victors in the NFC title game against the New Orleans Saints or not, the fact remains that they will be the conference’s representative in Super Bowl 53. The Rams are coming off a controversial 26-23 win in overtime against the Saints on the road last Sunday, and will meet the Pats in the grandest stage of football. One big question for them is if running back Todd Gurley will be 100 percent by the time the Super Bowl rolls around. Gurley played in the NFC title game, but looked shaky despite scoring a rushing touchdown to go with only 10 rushing yards. With plenty of rest ahead of him, perhaps that would be enough for Gurley to round into top form. In any case, he’ll get help from C.J, Anderson, who is providing the Rams another lethal option in their play action. The play action is going to be a big key in determining the success of Los Angeles, as Gurley and Anderson could confuse the Patriots’ defense and give enough time for Rams quarterback Jared Goff to find his targets downfield. The Rams’ defense, featuring standout Aaron Donald, is adept at pressuring quarterbacks. Donald’s ability to penetrate offensive lines has been a game-changer, generating 20.5 sacks in the 2018 regular season. This defensive prowess, particularly on the line, could disrupt Brady’s timing and rhythm, posing a significant challenge for the Patriots. The Rams are 4-0 ATS in their last four games.

Key Player Matchups to Watch

Keep an eye on the clash between Tom Brady and the Rams’ secondary, which will be essential considering the Patriots’ passing game. Aaron Donald against the Patriots' offensive line is another matchup that could define the game's outcome. Their previous encounters highlight these battles' intensity, making them fascinating to watch.

Writer’s Prediction

Rams win, 31-27, robbing the Patriots of a full-circle fairytale ending.
