Odds Split on Jadeveon Clowney Re-signing With Seahawks in 2020
Will Jadeveon Clowney return to the Seahawks next season? Photo from @AroundTheNFL (Twitter)
- Jadeveon Clowney was the 1st overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft
- Clowney had 3 sacks in 14 games for the Seattle Seahawks this season after being traded by the Houston Texans
- He is a free agent this off-season and could receive a contract similar to the 5-year, $105.5 million contract signed by Frank Clark in 2019
Jadeveon Clowney entered the league with limitless expectations after being selected 1st overall by the Houston Texans in 2014.
Now after a productive season with the Seahawks he’s set to enter free agency. Will he re-sign in Seattle or take his talents elsewhere?
Will Jadeveon Clowney Re-sign With Seahawks?

Odds taken Feb. 5th
All indications are Clowney felt appreciated by the Seahawks and he wants to sign with a contending team. That said, I still think he ultimately signs elsewhere after taking a free agency tour.
Seahawks Notoriously Shy in Free Agency
Clowney had a good, but not great first season in Seattle. He tallied only three sacks which was the least since his rookie year, but did cause havoc for opposing offensive lines who constantly needed to double team him to protect the quarterback.
Despite the lack of flashy numbers, the edge rusher that combined for 18.5 sacks in 2017 and 2018 will definitely command big, possibly record setting money.

That’s where things get dicey for Seattle. They haven’t shown a desire to overspend in free agency, something we saw evidence of last year with Frank Clark.
He was coming off a 14-sack year and they let him walk to Kansas City where he signed a five-year, $105.5 million deal. All indications are Clowney’s new deal will be in that neighborhood, so why would Seattle shy away from Clark only to sign Clowney a year later?
He Will Have Plenty of Suitors on Open Market
Clowney felt disrespected in Houston and wants to feel the love from his new team. With a contract that will approach and possibly even exceed $100 million, he’s going to feel plenty of love, but which team will be the one to fork over the money?
There's a lot of playing around with numbers that can be done to lower cap hit, etc… but… for those asking about signing Clowney AND Ngakoue. This is with cap relief by releasing Britt/Dickson… just $20 million in space to fortify rest of roster. It's not happening. pic.twitter.com/d7eij1i0Z0

The Detroit Lions, New York Giants, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams all could be in the market for pass rusher. With that many possible suitors are you willing to bet even odds that Clowney is headed back to Seattle?

Could Clowney re-sign in Seattle? Of course. But I’m much more comfortable taking a long list of desperate GM’s with cash to spend.
One other thing to consider, Seattle may have cap space but Clowney isn’t their only focus on the defensive side of the ball. They have Jarran Reed, Quinton Jefferson, Al Woods and Ezekiel Ansah who also need new deals. I’m betting on Seattle sticking to the script and avoiding a massive free agent deal.
