Daniel Jones vs Dwayne Haskins: Odds Say Haskins Starts More Games in 2019

Former Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins
To most people's surprise, Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins (pictured) went nine spots after Duke's Daniel Jones. But the odds favor Haskins seeing more playing time as a rookie. Photo by Maize & Blue Nation (Wiki Commons) [CC License].
  • Daniel Jones was selected 6th overall by the New York Giants
  • Dwayne Haskins was selected with the 15th pick by Washington
  • Both teams have questions at QB, meaning both rookies could see action in the 2019 season

Daniel Jones (#6, NY Giants) was selected before Dwayne Haskins (#15, Washington) in the 2019 NFL Draft, but the odds suggest that the Ohio State product will start more games in the 2019 season.

Daniel Jones (NY Giants) 4.5 O -120/U -120

I love both of these bets for different reasons.  Here’s the breakdown for where you can find value betting on and against these rookie quarterbacks.

Haskins Will Push For Playing Time Early

Washington got lucky with Arizona opting for Kyler Murray and the New York Giants shocking the football world with Daniel Jones at #6.  With Alex Smith out of commission after that brutal injury last season, the path is almost clear for the former Buckeyes QB.

With only Case Keenum and Colt Mccoy standing in his way, it’s absolutely reasonable to expect Haskins to play this year.  He finished first in the NCAA in both passing yards (4,580) and touchdown passes (47) last season.

Rookie QB’s are being handed the reigns earlier than in years past, and Haskins will have the fan-base buzzing by mid-season. He should have no problem hitting the over here.

PICK: OVER 7.5 (-120)

Expect Jones To Sit Behind Manning

Finding someone who liked the Giants selection of Duke QB Daniel Jones at #6 is almost impossible to do.  That said, he’s going to be second on the depth chart behind Eli Manning, who is clearly on his way out the door.

Will Jones push for playing time this year?  The Giants actually hope not.  They’d like him to sit and watch for a year, similar to the way Patrick Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith in Kansas City.

GM Dave Gettleman has even hinted Jones could sit for longer than one season.  The plan isn’t for Jones to see action in 2019 and it will be tough for him to knock the door down with his limited skill set.

In three seasons at Duke, he completed less than 60% of his passes while tallying 59 TDs and 29 interceptions.  He didn’t have the best supporting cast, but after the trade of Odell Beckham Jr., he isn’t going to have a great one in New York either.

Jones is steady in the way Ryan Tannehill is steady.  He has a high floor but a low ceiling, not the type of QB that will flash and dash in training camp and steal the job.  Expect him to sit for a long, long while.

PICK: UNDER 4.5 (-120)
