In a late Sunday night news dump, the New England Patriots agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million dollar deal with former MVP and Panthers QB Cam Newton.
Upon news of the deal, Newton’s odds in both the MVP and Comeback Player of the Year races have seen shifts. He won the former in 2015, and if he can come close to replicating that season’s numbers, he’ll have a good chance of grabbing one of those awards.

Newton opened with +750 odds to win this award as a free agent, and stayed at that number as the offseason progressed. Now, with news of his signing, he’s seen his odds jump to +400.
Is Newton a Valuable Pick?
There’s a myriad of reasons to be excited about Newton’s chances to win the CPOY. He’s dealt with injury issues off-and-on for years, going all the way back to the 2016 season opener when he was sacked multiple times by that dominant Broncos defense.
After starting just two games in 2019, no player is more poised for a comeback than a finally-healthy Cam Newton.
Not only is Newton set to be truly healthy for the first time since 2015, but he’s also being paired with the greatest coach to ever do it. Under Bill Belichick, as well as longtime Patriot OC Josh McDaniels – Newton is entering a fantastic situation this season – albeit it under a COVID-affected offseason.
Many of the players on the board are coming off of tough seasons, but for Newton, there’s been a few seasons in a row that have been struggles.
In his last three full seasons as a starter, Pro Football Focus had him ranked 24th, 27th, and 23rd in 2016, ’17, and ’18 respectively. With a big 2020, no one would be more deserving of the CPOY award than the former Heisman winner.

Newton’s NFL MVP odds now sit at +3000, a significantly shorter price than the +8275 it was earlier this month.
Can Newton Replicate 2015 MVP Numbers?
When Newton won the MVP award in 2015, his numbers were eye-popping at the time. He was named the league’s most valuable player after throwing for 3,837 yards and 35 touchdowns, while adding 636 rushing yards and ten touchdowns on the ground.
In recent seasons, the sport has already progressed to a point where those numbers may not be enough to win the award.
2018 MVP Patrick Mahomes threw for 50 touchdowns alone, 15 more than Newton in 2015. Reigning MVP Lamar Jackson had 42 total touchdowns, and dwarfed Newton’s 2015 season by compiling over 4,300 all-purpose yards.
Value in Betting on Newton?
Considering the sheer volume of numbers that quarterbacks around the league put up, Newton will have to have a massive year to win a second MVP award. Considering his injury history, it’s hard to see him running the ball often and racking up the kind of dynamic numbers of a Lamar Jackson in 2020, or even replicating his 2015 stats.
Additionally, when it comes to value, Cam may not fit the bill in 2020. The Patriots, with a healthy Isaiah Wynn and Sony Michel, are poised to have a strong running game this season. There’s also the defense, one of the league’s best that features 2019 DPOY Stephon Gilmore.
The MVP is typically awarded to a guy that does everything for his team. In New England, it’s going to be a team effort in 2020.
