It didn’t take long for former Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson to catch on with another NFL team.
Just two weeks after being relieved of his head coaching duties with the Browns, Jackson has resurfaced, taking on the role of Special Assistant to Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis.
But where will he be next season?
Odds on Hue Jackson's Position in 2019

---|---|
NFL Head Coach | +1000 |
NFL Assistant Coach | +150 |
NCAA Head Coach | +400 |
NCAA Assistant Coach | +750 |

With the move, Jackson has boosted his odds of holding an NFL job at the start of next season.
The 53-year-old is pegged as a short +150 wager of holding down an assistant coach’s job in Week 1 of the 2019 NFL campaign, but sports much longer +1000 odds of seizing an NFL head coaching job.
A Rocky Road in Cleveland
Jackson endured a rocky road during his two and a half seasons as bench boss in Cleveland.
The Browns posted a dismal 1-31 SU record, including a win-less 2017 campaign, over Jackson’s first two seasons at the helm.
But they did show signs of progress while going 2-5-1 this season. However, that proved to be not enough to save Jackson, who was fired by the Browns on October 29, and replaced by defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

With over three decades of coaching experience, including considerable experience coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers at both the college and NFL levels, Jackson brings immediate help to a Bengals squad that has been limited to 14 or fewer points in two of their past three outings, and ranks 25th in the NFL with just 337.6 total yards per game.
Jackson had notable success during his tenure with the Oakland Raiders, serving as their offensive coordinator before becoming head coach. He helped improve the team's offense, boosting their points-per-game average.
At USC, Jackson also made significant impacts, mentoring players who later progressed to successful NFL careers. His experience running pro-style offenses has been a key element of his coaching toolkit.
The Bengals' 2018 campaign has seen mixed results, with injuries affecting key positions like wide receiver and linebacker.
Despite these challenges, standout performances by players such as A.J. Green have kept Cincinnati competitive.
The team's defense, however, has struggled, leading to its current rank near the bottom in several statistical categories.
However, defense is expected to be his primary responsibility after the Bengals surrendered 130 total points over their past three outings.
Could Jackson Replace Marvin Lewis?
Despite their recent struggles, the Bengals remain in the thick of the AFC North race with a 5-4-0 record, and are pegged as an intriguing +500 bet to finish atop the divisional standings.
But with no playoff wins in 15 seasons, and two straight years out of the playoffs, another failed season could be the end of Marvin Lewis. Marvin Lewis's long tenure with the Bengals has been marked by moderate regular-season success but limited playoff achievements.
He has led Cincinnati to multiple division titles, yet playoff victories have eluded the franchise under his leadership.
This history adds context to the pressure Lewis faces as the Bengals seek postseason results. Speculation has risen that the arrival of Jackson places Lewis in the hot seat.

However, Lewis has been a fixture in Cincinnati since 2003 and is unlikely to leave his post except by his own accord. That likely turns the focus to the college ranks for Jackson’s next coaching job.
A Return to College Not Out of the Question
Jackson spent over a decade coaching at the NCAA level, including stops at Arizona State, where he acted as Running Backs Coach and Quarterbacks Coach before spending four years at USC as offensive coordinator.
He has emerged as a strong +400 bet to take over the reigns of a college program as head coach, and a +750 to land an NCAA assistant coaching job.
Analysis of NFL and NCAA Coaching Dynamics
Coaching in the NFL versus the NCAA presents distinct challenges.
The NFL demands a tactical focus with players at the peak of their physical capabilities.
In contrast, college coaching involves developing young talent and managing recruitment.
Each environment requires a different strategic approach, impacting how coaches like Jackson adjust to roles at these levels.
However, with competition for coaching jobs fierce at all levels, Jackson is pegged as a +100 favorite to not be coaching at either level at the start of next season.
