BetOnline’s Odds Say Josh Gordon Won’t Be Back in NFL Week 1 of 2019

  • BetOnline is already out with a prop bet on whether Josh Gordon will be back in the NFL to open the 2019 season
  • Gordon announced earlier this week he was stepping away from football to deal with mental health issues
  • Gordon was also issued an NFL suspension for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement

Josh Gordon's NFL future was dealt a double whammy this week. The New England Patriots wide receiver announced via statement that he was taking time away from the gridiron to deal with his personal mental health issues.

At the same time, Gordon was returned to the NFL's Reserve/Commissioner Suspended list indefinitely for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

BetOnline is already offering a prop bet on whether Gordon will be on an NFL team's active roster for Week 1 of the 2019 season.

Gordon lasted just 11 games with the Patriots until he was suspended. It's the third suspension of his NFL career.

Patriots Are NFL Reclamation Kings

During their run as the NFL's top franchise, the Patriots have employed a formula similar to what the Oakland Raiders established in the 1970s, serving as a last-chance saloon for many NFL players who looked to be out of options.

Just as the Raiders got mileage out of Ted Hendricks, Jim Plunkett, Lyle Alzado, and John Matuszak, the Patriots have gone through more retreads than a second-hand tire store.

“(We) can assemble players, especially veteran players, who can acclimate to our culture. If people don't adjust to our standards, they won't be here.” – Patriots owner Robert Kraft

Some, like Randy Moss, Kyle Van Noy, Danny Woodhead, and LeGarrette Blount, worked out well for New England.

Others, such as Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco, did not. Gordon, their latest reclamation project, also looks to be a failure.

What's Next For Gordon?

New England wasn't Gordon's second chance. More like his fourth chance, which makes you wonder if and when his suspension is lifted, will there be another NFL team willing to roll the dice on the talented but troubled pass catcher?

BetOnline is also pondering this notion, posting a prop bet that considers Gordon's next destination.

Odds on What is next for Josh Gordon

Team Odds on Where Joe Flacco Will Play For Week 1 of 2019 NFL Season at BetOnline
NFL Active Roster -300
XFL Active Roster +300
CFL Active Roster +700
Arrested +700
Wal-Mart Greeter +50000

Assuming it gets off the ground, the XFL might be the best bet here. Gordon would fit well with the image that Vince McMahon likes his rebel football league to project.

As for the NFL, they gave Gordon a get out of jail free card to resume his career this season, and he squandered it. It doesn't seem possible that he opens next season on an NFL roster.
